Scary Places: The Stanley Hotel, Estes Park, Colorado

When I mention the name “The Stanley Hotel,” you may think “But Libby, I’ve never heard of this place.” Perhaps not, but if you have ever seen the classic Kubrick/King horror The Shining, you have gotten a sense of The Stanley. (This file is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 License) This hotel is a 138 room Georgian hotel located in Estes Park, Colorado. It was built in 1909 by Freelan O. Stanley (co-founder of Stanley Steamer), hence the name. Many famous people have stayed there – Theodore Roosevelt and John Philip Sousa just to name a few. But, perhaps … Continue reading

Scary Places: The Hotel Chelsea in New York City

Ever notice how ghosts tend to haunt old dwellings where many tortured souls lived? Such is the case of the historic Hotel Chelsea in New York City. The Chelsea was built in 1883, when that particular area was the center of the theater district. Maybe that is why it always seemed to attract talented, yet troubled artists. It was first divided into private apartments, and then turned into a hotel, but regardless, it has seen its share of celebrities. Infamous Hotel Rooms – Part 4

This is my final blog about infamous hotel rooms – rooms in which something so legendary happened, the people often ask for this specific room. Actually, a few of the rooms I will mention in this blog are a little less notorious and more just places fans love to visit. Room 203 – Ramada Inn Union Square, San Francisco, CA It was in room 203 that jazz singer Billie Holiday was busted by the police for possession of opium in January 1949. She was acquitted later that year when her lawyer convinced the jury she had been framed. There is … Continue reading

Infamous Hotel Rooms – Part 3

Here are even more hotel rooms that are known for their notorious reputations: Room 1220 – Westin Hotel, San Francisco, CA Room 1220 was the scene of one of the saddest Hollywood downfalls ever – that of comedian Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle. Back in the 20’s, Arbuckle was raking in a million a year at Paramount, making him one of the biggest stars of the day. However, on September 3, 1921, actress Virginia Rappe became ill in his hotel room, eventually dying of peritonitis. Arbuckle was charged with rape and although he was acquitted, the media grabbed a hold of the … Continue reading

Infamous Hotel Rooms – Part 2

Are you planning to travel this summer and still looking for an unusual place to stay? Consider some of one of these infamous hotel rooms: Room 217 – The Stanley Hotel, Estes Park, CO The Stanley Hotel was built in 1909 and is elegant and historic but apparently Stephen King saw more than that when he stayed in room 217. It is said that The Stanley Hotel was his inspiration for his thriller The Shining, although none of the movie was actually filmed here. Still, legend has it that the 138-room hotel is haunted, so maybe that provided inspiration for … Continue reading

Infamous Hotel Rooms – Part 1

I saw an AOL article the other day and knew it was just up my alley – infamous hotel rooms! So, I decided to start doing a little research and low and behold, I found many infamous hotel rooms all over the country: Room 871 – Mayflower Hotel, Washington, D.C. This is one of the most recent “infamous” hotel rooms, now known as “The Governor’s Room.” It was the one in which former New York governor Eliot Spitzer stayed when he met with a call girl. The room is elegant with its dark wood furnishing and patterned carpet and the … Continue reading

Hotel Bargain Like No Other

Remember the Watergate Hotel? It became a Washington landmark during the infamous Nixon scandal. The hotel is about to undergo a major facelift, but before it does you have the chance to get in on some incredible savings. No, the hotel is not offering $2 room rates; rather, the hotel is having a massive blow-out sale as it tries to get rid of existing beds, sofas, silver teapots… even toilets to prepare for the renovation. Don’t worry bargain hunters; you still have plenty of time to get in on the action. The sale began earlier today and will last until … Continue reading

Nancy Grace Stirs Controversy with Houston Comment

I don’t watch Nancy Grace much on television, but I know that she generally deals with criminal cases such as the Elizabeth Smart kidnapping and the Caylee Anthony murder. While many are still grieving Whitney Houston’s death, some are angry at Grace for her words about Houston. What did Grace say that was so horrifying? Well, she questioned what was in Houston’s system, who might have given her the drugs, and who, if anyone, allowed her to slip into the water. Perhaps the part that ticked many fans off was Grace even went on to suggest that the possibility that … Continue reading

Looks Like I Picked a Bad Week to be a Celebrity Kid

My blog title is a variation of the Airplane! movie quote that I thought of this week when I read the celebrity news because, it was a tough, tough week to be a celebrity kid. First up was Clark Gable’s grandson Clark James. Handsome like his famous grandfather, but perhaps as smart as this week, Clark James, 22, was charged with a felony for pointing a laser inside the cockpit of a police helicopter. His manager Roxie Davis said he was simply shining the laser out the window of a car and said it was “a huge mistake.” She said … Continue reading
